Retirement in Ajijic PDF Print E-mail

It is estimated that close to half a million foreigners, especially Americans and Canadians retire in Mexico.

For the retirees that look for a quiet setting, the perfect place is Ajijic. It is sometimes hard to cope with relocation, especially in another country where they speak a different language and the culture is not quite the same. If you are planning to retire in Ajijic, consider both the advantages as well as the disadvantages. Most of the retirees state that they moved to Mexico because of the climate and financial reasons. Pensions go further when spending in pesos and the cost of living is much lower than in their home country. You have to be very convinced about your decision. It may be difficult for you to get used to the pace at which things tend to get done in Mexico (car, electric and plumbing repairs, deliveries, etc.), sometimes that can be irritating. Most people take around a year to understand this and live life the Mexican way. Selection in supermarkets may not be as diverse, especially in a small town like Ajijic. You may not find your favorite things and groceries, but because of the closeness to Guadalajara, you can find a wide variety of imported goods. Mail service is very slow, you can subscribe to all major newspapers and magazines, but your delivery will sometimes be delayed. Advantages? You can watch US television programming, internet access is available anywhere. Life is simple and you will never have endless nights going through all your mail and unpaid bills. Forget about TV dinners, the food is fresh and affordable. The weather is fantastic and a lot of people in Mexico are bilingual, you will not suffer when trying to communicate. Mexicans in general are friendly and life in Ajijic can be wonderful.
