The city of Guanajuato was declared by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1988. The city of Guanajuato is considered the cultural capital of the center of Mexico. It is only a three hour drive from Mexico City. It is settled in a ravine. During the 18th Century, it became the most important mining center during the colony of Spain in Mexico, thanks to that; the city has the most magnificent architectural sites in the area. People can admire the entire city by walking through its callejones (alleys); tourists can sense a feeling of traveling back in time, where there are plenty of historical and picturesque monuments and buildings, peaceful plazas, houses with balconies full of flowers. It is a city where street lights and neon signs are prohibited; this makes the city very enjoyable to walk around. People can visit the Alhondiga de Granaditas, where the first battle for the independence started, now it is the Museo Regional de Historia; in the main square, people can admire the Basilica, the city hall and several government offices; few feet from there, we find the Jardin de la Union, where local and tourist people gather in order to have a drink in a cafe, listen to estudiantinas (traditional student music groups) while they prepare to start walking through the alleys playing and singing their music. We must not forget El callejon del beso (the kissing alley), where the alley is so narrow that people can kiss while they are in the houses on the different sides. The Museo de las Momias (mommies) is also a great attraction. The beautiful colonial city of Guanajuato hosts the Festival Internacional Cervantino, named after Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, author of Don Quixote. Each October the festival is filled with a variety of national and international, cultural and artistic events. |
